What is a Resume?

A Resume is a French word. Its literal meaning is ‘Summary’.

A resume is a formal record that provides an outline of the professional qualifications, educational background, total work experience, technical and non-technical skills, personal details, and noteworthy accomplishments of a person.

The purpose of a resume is to give a concise and crisp overview of a job-seeking candidate’s career. Anyone who is looking for a job has to start with preparing his or her resume. Think of it as a ticket to be able to get into the job market and land a suitable job for yourself.

Why is it important?

So, why is a Resume important for a job seeker who has already completed his formal college education or a person who has years of experience? Well, here’s the answer: ➢ It sketches a picture of your qualifications

➢ It describes what makes you stand out

➢ It determines whether a candidate is suitable for a job

➢ It grabs the attention of the recruiter.

➢ It presents the benefits the candidate has to offer the organization ➢ It determines whether a candidate is meeting most of the job requirements ➢ It enables you to sell your skills and brand yourself

Resume layout

The very first thing that is noticeable about the resume is its layout. Resume layout means how the data has been laid out on the paper. Is that content on the resume organized and unorganized? Is the resume too short for the position applied or is it looking too long and boring?

Here is a checklist that you can go through to ensure that you prepare the best possible resume with the best layout.

Resume layout must have:

➢ One page in length

➢ Crystal clear section headings

➢ Impressive noticeable headers

➢ Sufficient white space

➢ Choosing the best font size

➢ Choosing the right font type

➢ Include right sections

➢ Set the right limits to the resume content

Content of the Resume

Well, as we have already gone through the fundamentals of a resume, let’s get right into the other requisites of a resume. The most common sections that are there in almost all the resumes are:

➢ Basic contact information

➢ Professional summary or objective

➢ Total work experience

➢ Educational qualifications

➢ Technical and Non-technical Skills

➢ Academic and career achievements

➢ Personal details – Languages, Hobbies, etc.

Let’s get into each of the above sections in detail on how to write them so that your resume stands out the rest and get the job you deserve.

Basic contact information – This is the most important section of your resume because even if you have all the rest of the things in place but don’t have the correct contact information, the recruiter will not be able to reach you despite liking your resume.

Your contact information must include:

  1. Full name
  2. Contact number
  3. Email address

Professional summary or objective –  It is not a secret anymore that the first impression always matters whether they are in your personal lives or your career. If the first impression is not made impactful, it is likely to stay that way and very difficult to change later. The same goes for your resume. The HR recruiter spends around 6 seconds scanning each resume. Your resume should be able to catch the eye of the recruiter. The way it can be done is through a great professional summary or objective. Bothe are placed at the top of your resume, right after the contact information section.

What is a Professional summary?

A Professional summary is an outline or an overview of your career. You have to have a Professional summary unless you are a fresh college graduate. In your Professional summary you have to mention

  1. Your job
  2. Years of experience
  3. Top achievement
  4. Desired goals

What is a Resume objective?

It is the goal of your resume. It communicates your motivation for getting into a new field. Like Professional summary, the resume objective should be around 2-3 sentences. It is a must for candidates who are fresh graduates or have no experience.

➢ Total work experience – This is one of the most important part of your resume where you are actually selling yourself, displaying your past accomplishments and responsibilities.

➢ This section needs more attention while preparing a resume as the recruiter is more interred in this.

How to list work experience?

The listing of the work experience should be in reverse chronological, i.e., starting with the most recent job.

The standard format for your work experience is as given below:

➢ Job Title/Position: Your Job Title is mentioned at the top of each work experience entry. When the recruiter scans your resume, you want them to know at one glance that you have relevant work experience for the job.

➢ Company name (Its location and description) – We also mention the name of the relevant company and the location of the office you have worked at. ➢ Achievements and responsibilities – This is the fundamental of each work experience entry. Depending on your field, you want to list either your achievements or responsibilities.

➢ Dates employed – The time frame of your work experience in each company. The standard format to mention your dates employed, as expected by recruiters and employers, is MM/YYYY.

Educational qualificationThe next section that we have to now deal with is your educational qualification. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you list them out in the best possible way.

  1. Program name – For example: ‘B. Tech. in Computer Science’
  2. University name – For example: ‘Savitribai Phule Pune University’ 3. Year graduated – For example: ‘2021’ ‘2022’
  3. Percentage – For example: ‘88.97%’

Skills Another essential section in your resume is the ‘Skills’ section. Here, you have to mention all that technical and non-technical knowledge you have which makes you the perfect candidate for the job.

Technical skills – These are Hard skills centered on Commerce, Science, Engineering related fields. Highlighting your technical skills on your resume is critical to landing interviews with recruiters looking for qualified candidates. Some examples are: Programming, Data analysis, Tally, Python, Java, C/C++, CAD/CAM, Catia.

These relevant technical skills make you a valuable commodity to potential employers in your field.

Non-technical skills – Along with the technical skills, there are some non-technical skills that employers look for. These are also called Soft Skills. These skills are usually difficult to teach but more important to many employers. Some of the examples of these skills are: Communication skills, Time management skills, Adaptability, Problem-solving skills, Organization, Presentability, Creativity, Emotional intelligence, etc.

Academic and career achievements – This is the most important section where you mention your academic as well as career achievements. Generally, a candidate only focuses on the roles and responsibilities of his previous employment. However, these responsibilities are the same for the same job role. So to stand out, a candidate must

mention his achievements in the resume. These are additional to the roles and responsibilities.

Examples of Academic/career achievements:

Use action verbs to state these achievements. For example:

I was handling a team of 10 people. Handled a team of 10 people. I have developed new Employee evaluation program

I have worked as organiser of the annual function

➢ Languages known by you

➢ Hobbies and interests

➢ Date of birth

➢ Passport status

➢ Permanent address

➢ Marital status

If you do a checklist of all these above mentioned points, we are sure you will have one of the best resumes on the job portals and will quickly get an interview call. So, if you have missed any point make sure that you have made the edition to your resume and updated it.

All the best!!
