The Successful Way To Prepare For The IELTS Exam –
Preparing for your test can be daunting and leave you feeling incredibly overwhelmed about where to begin. Even a person who has a good command on English language or one who feels confident to get a highest band score, can falter. There are many strategies to follow and understand when appearing for IELTS.
There are many ways to start preparing for the IELTS:
I always suggest that the best thing to do first is write an essay on any of the topics given for the test. The essays are not as one would write during their school days. The format of the essays should surely follow the parameters of writing an essay- minimum 5 paragraphs- introduction, 3 body paragraphs and lastly conclusion. Practice writing in pencil for your IELTS, in a legible handwriting, if you are not appearing for online test. Proof read the essay or letter before submitting it.
One thing is clear, do not copy, paste the topic in the introduction, but write it in your own words.
Knowing our strengths and weaknesses is necessary while preparing for IELTS. It is always good to take the help of an expert to know where you falter or lag behind. A preparation course is always a good way to get ready for the test.

Understanding of the test format is another thing which one should know-
Familiarizing with the test content, along with the question types for each section helps a lot to get mentally prepared with the pattern and format.
Another important point to be noted is the exam time constraints-
The more we are aware of the test structure, the more are our chances of completing the test within the allocated time frame. While practicing, always follow the timings, so that you become accustomed to the pace of the test.
Right from the Listening task to the speaking task, each one is time framed. For listening task, the audio is played only once without any pause or rewind. I would suggest going on if you have missed any answer to any question and continue with hearing of the further part of the conversation. You can always fill in the missing gaps with guessed answers, which can be right at some time.
The extra 10 minutes always helps in getting the answers written down correctly. Also remember to note down the listening answers only on the listening side of the answer sheet and not on the reading side.
For reading task, one complete hour is given, without any extra time to transfer your answers. I would advise you to complete the easier passages first and then go on to the difficult or tough ones.
Though they say that the passages are in increasing order of difficulty, I am totally against this statement. It is up to us to feel which passage is easy or difficult, depending on our liking of the subject matter or topics. For a science stream student, literary topics or passages will be difficult, while for a technology student anything to do with literature will be difficult to follow. Same for those who love literature or arts, for them passages from science or technology will be tough to comprehend.

So divide the hour in such a way that you can complete the passages with ease and also transfer the answers at the same time, so that you don’t have to rush and hurry to do the same later, when the time is almost over.
For the writing task, an hour is given for both the tasks- 1 and 2. More attention should be given to the task number 2 as it carries more marks. For General IELTS, writing task one, the letter can be formal, semi-formal or informal. As you don’t have to write the address, and directly start with the salutation, it is easy to follow the pattern of letter writing without wasting any time. Take care that you end up the letter with proper complimentary closing. Do not write anything out of content or what is not necessary.
The task 2 is important and care should be taken to follow the parameters of writing an essay. Also the word count matters a lot. Even if it is said write 150 words for task 1 and 250 for task 2, I always advice to write about 170 to 270 words for each of the task, so that if at all one makes 10 mistakes and the count goes below, still the word count will be in excess and not below the demanded word count.
For task one for Academic IELTS, always note that your opinion is not asked for, but the exact information is needed. A person reading the matter, should get a clear idea of what has been described or written.
Speaking task is only for about 14 to 15 minutes, but it covers up a lot of factors. We assume that only the communication part is important, but I would like to say that your body language and eye contact plays a major role in this task. The way a person dresses up is also an important aspect not to be overlooked.
Therefore remember that time limit is important in each module of this test and you can loose marks if you do not complete within the given specific time.
Start developing your English capabilities. Improve your English as IELTS is an English Proficiency Test, and it is expected from you to be good in it. Always keep in mind that learning IELTS is a process, which on an average takes about 3 months to move up a score band by one point. So start preparing for your test 3 months before and mark my words- find an Institution or a trainer, who will help you with your English Development and IELTS Strategies.
Multitask when you are listening in English. There are different types of questions in your listening module, so be prepared to understand how to answer each one of them. You should always read the questions as time is given for the same during the listening task, to understand what type of information is being asked- whether it is a name, number or an address?
Develop your Reading skills. Scanning and skimming , reading for understanding the gist, the main ideas, details, understanding logical arguments and recognizing the opinion, attitude and purpose of the author, is needed. Practice variety of questions to get accustomed to them and try to focus on the information you have to find.
Use of appropriate English terms and connecting and linking words should be practiced. A preparation course will guide you to answer the different types of essays- Agree and disagree, discussing two opposing opinions, advantages and disadvantages, problems and solutions, causes and solutions and causes and effects etc.
For speaking task, speak with fluency and coherence, paying attention to pronunciation. What is important in this module is your language proficiency and not your knowledge about anything.
