Civil Services Examination (CSE)

Engineering Services Exam (IES)
UPSC conducts Engineering Services Examination to meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. Selected people are recruited in various departments in different Engineering Services such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering posts. An IES Officer works in technical areas including power, roads, manufacturing etc. There are 2 phases of this exam consisting of 2 papers.

Indian Forest Services Exam (IFoS)
The Indian Forest Services Exam is conducted for the recruitment of Forest Services of India. Forest Officers function independently of district administration and exercise administrative, judicial and financial powers in their own domain. The selected applicants hold most top positions in forest departments of the state. They have to serve both State and Central Governments mandatorily. It ensures the environmental stability and maintenance of ecological balance.

Assistant Provident Fund Commissioners
UPSC conducts an exam for the post of Assistant Provident Fund Commissioners every year. The duties of APFCs are to seem into the work of Accounts, Enforcement, Administration, Cash, Recovery, Legal, Computer and Pension including the statutory and administrative functions. APFCs also work for the settlement of claims, general administration maintenance of Cash Book/ Reconciliation of Bank Statements MIS returns, conduct an inquiry.

Special Class Railway Apprentices Exam (SCRA)
Special Class Railway Apprentices Exam (SCRA) is conducted by the UPSC for the recruitment of Special Class Apprentices into the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for an undergraduate course in mechanical engineering. There are two stages in the recruitment process which are written examination and personal interview. Those who clear the interview are recruited as SCRA by the Indian Railways.

Combined Defence Services Exam (CDS)
Combined Defence Services Exam (CDS) consists of three stages – written examination, personal interview and medical examination. The exam is conducted twice, once in February and in November. The candidates who have qualified the examination are recruited as officers within the Indian Army, Air Force, academy, Officers Training and academy. They are also provided a stipend of INR 21,000 monthly. Only unmarried graduates are permitted to take the exam.

National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy Exam (NA)
UPSC conducts NDA and NA exam twice during a year to realize entry into the National Defence Academy and Indian academy. These exams induct officers into the Indian Defence Forces including the Army, Navy and Air Force. The cadets of all three armed services are trained within the academy together before going with the pre-commissioning training. Admissions are accepted via written examination followed by an SSB interview. A medical test is also conducted to check the overall health and physical fitness of the candidate.

Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE)
Combined Medical Services Examination is conducted by the UPSC for recruiting candidates functioning as Medical Officers under the Government of India into the various services such as Indian Ordnance Factories Service, Indian Railways, etc. For this service, the candidate should be a qualified doctor. For CMS, candidates are selected on the idea of a written examination followed by an interview.

Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination
UPSC conducts Geologist and Geo-Scientist Exam for recruiting people in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Water as geologists and chemists. Also people are recruited for the post of hydrogeologist in the Central Ground Water Board.

Indian administrative service (IAS):

These officers represent our country in other countries as well as in International bodies like the United Nations. Their major task is to take care of friendly relations with other countries. They have to take care of India as a Brand globally. IF officers get a variable pay when posted abroad to hide the difference in their purchasing power. The other duties of these officers are, maintaining trade relations, cultural relations, academic relations, military relations, etc. So, they’re in-tuned with IAS officers, Army officers, etc. to coordinate such relations.

Indian revenue service (IT) (IRS-IT):
These officers generate revenue for the Government through income tax. They have to collect all taxes on income in time to meet the expenditure of the government. These officers are now required to know technology also. Both income generated at personal and the corporate level are to be assessed and levied by these officers. Nowadays they’re also placed on election duty to watch the expenditure of varied candidates.

Indian revenue service (CBEC) (IRS-Customs):
The officers in this department deal with the tasks of formulation of policy concerning collection of Customs & Central Excise duties and Service Tax, prevention of smuggling and administration of matters relating to Customs, Central Excise, Service Tax and Narcotics to the extent under CBEC’s preview. The officers seen within the airports work under an IRS officer.

Indian audit and account service (IAAS):
Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IAAD) assists a constitutional authority called CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) in fulfilment of his constitutional duties. IAAS officers function in the highest management of the audit department. Audit means to check for inconsistencies, etc. IAAS officers derive their independence from the CAG’s constitutional independence and work freed from political pressures unlike the other Government departments. IAAS Officers work closely with the Union and government departments for efficient audit.

Indian information service (IIS):
These officers manage government’s medium, electronic media, and advertising needs of ministries and act as press advisors. They control official media. They get to figure for the management of Doordarshan and every one India Radio.

Indian civil account services (ICAS):
One thing that led to the creation of this service is the separation of audit from accounts at the Central level. ICA officers maintain the accounts of the government. You do Public Financial Management as an ICAS officer. Thus the officers manage payments, receipts, pension, accounting and financial reporting and internal audit within the civil ministries.

Indian corporate law service (ICLS):
ICL officers regulate the company sector within the country. They are vested with the implementation of Limited Liability Partnership Act and Companies Act. These officers monitor whether the businesses are running consistent with the provisions of the govt or not.

Indian trade service (ITS):
These officers handle international trade and commerce of India. They formulate Foreign Trade Policy of India. They also participate in the international trade negotiations at multilateral forums such as the World Trade Organisation. Export promotion, quality checks, etc. are some other functions.

Indian defence estate service (IDES):
Ministry of Defence is the largest land holder among all the ministries of the Indian Government. To manage this land optimally is the task of IDES officers. They are also appointed as CEOs of Cantonment Boards to look after the civil affairs in the cantonment.

Indian defence account service (IDAS):
The officers provide payment accounting, financial advice, and internal audit functions in respect of Army, Air Force, Navy, Ordnance factories, DRDO, BRO, Canteen Stores Department and allied organisations. Indian ordinance factories service (IOFS): These factories manufacture defence equipment. There are more than 1.5 lakh employees working in these factories. The administration of these factories is managed by IOFS officers.

Indian postal service:
These officers monitor and manage the postal services in the country. There are many employees serving in this department and post offices are located almost everywhere in the country. Indian postal and telecommunication accounts and finance service: These services are related to the department of posts. These officers maintain the finance and accounts of the department as there are many employees.

Indian railway account service (IRAS):
Indian railways is also one of the largest employers of the government and it has the monopoly of providing rail services in the country, IRAS officers maintain accounts in railways.

Indian railway personnel service (IRPS):
These officers are basically like the HR in Railways.

Indian railway traffic service (IRTS):
These officers manage the cargo traffic and passengers of Indian Railways.

Railway protection force (RPF):
These officers serve in the Railway Protection Force as security commissioners.

How many times can I appear for the UPSC Exam?

The number of attempts for various examinations is as follows:
IAS exam:
(Open Category) – 6 attempts till 32 years of age.
(Other Backward Classes) – 9 attempts till 35 years of age.
(SC/ST) unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.
Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons (general category): 42 years.
Upper age limit for Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities in a disturbed area or with any foreign country and released as a consequence thereof: 35 years.
Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including ECOs/SSCOs and Commissioned Officers who have rendered at least five years Military Service: 37 years.
Apart from these mentioned limits, candidates from OBC/ SC/ ST category will get the benefit of cumulative age relaxation.

EXAMINATION PATTERN:

There are the following three stages of the examination:
Preliminary Examination
There are 2 papers for the Preliminary exam:

Paper I:
General Studies (GS) consists of 200 questions and time allotted is 2 hours.
Paper II:
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) carrying 200 marks for each paper and time allotted is 2 hours for each paper.
There will be 1/3rd negative marking in both the papers.
The Preliminary Examination will be held at most of the districts in Maharashtra. Once the Preliminary Examination result is declared, the candidates who pass in prelims will be called to appear for the Main Examination. Preliminary Examination marks are not counted for the final selection of the candidates.

Main/Written Examination
The Main Examination (subjective) comprises 9 papers which are typically held from right on time October for around 21 days. The latest pattern of Main examination is as follows:-

Interview/Personality Test
The candidates who have passed the written examination (Mains) successfully are called for the interview. In the interview process, the points taken into consideration are, eligibility required for the candidate’s post opted for, personality, study level of social and national issues, awareness of events occurring around, the capacity to take decisions, presence of mind, etc. The final merit list will be declared after consolidating candidate’s marks in the Main exam and in the Interview. Accordingly, eligible candidates will be appointed at various posts.
