‘You may have tangible wealth untold; caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be. I had a mother who read to me’. —Strickland Gillian

I can never imagine my childhood without going through a story book or the nights without listening to my mother’s loving voice telling us siblings a new or repeated story at bedtime.

Our world circulated around the imaginary world full of fairies, goblins, elves, witches, giants, kings and queens.

Fairy tales in childhood are stepping stones throughout life, leading the way through trouble and trial. The value of fairy tales lies not in a brief literary escape from reality, but in the gift of hope that goodness truly is more powerful than evil and that even the darkest reality can lead to a Happily Ever After. Do not take that gift of hope lightly. It has the power to conquer despair in the midst of sorrow, to light the darkness in the valleys of life, to whisper “One more time” in the face of failure. Hope is what gives life to dreams, making the fairy tale the reality. —L.R. Knost

Reading is my hobby. I like to read books in my leisure time. I am fond of the Harry Potter series written by J.K.Rowling. I have also read other books like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; The Tale of Peter Rabbit; Winnie-the-Pooh; The Adventures of Rusty and The Malgudi days.
Besides, the novels and books, I also read the children’s magazines like the Champak, Tinkle, and Wisdom.

I believe that ‘There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book. —Frank Serafini.

The love for reading has to be inculcated in the child from the beginning, which is the prime duty of the parents and grandparents. They have to lead to believe in the imaginary world to make them believe in dreams and encourage their imagination and creativity.

READING EARLIER AND NOW:

In earlier times, children either go outside to play or read books at home. But now reading books have been replaced by electronic gadgets. Reading habit for children will help them in the long run. They will learn new things, reading moral stories will help them to learn good habits. Parents should try to influence their child to read books.
Nowadays children only use smartphones which is not beneficial for them. Parents should take efforts to help their child start reading books. This will help them to gain knowledge, improve English, and learn new things.

A growing child needs to be exposed and made aware of many things in life, the most important phase would be up to eight years as far as early learning is considered. If we can get children to start liking for reading books, it would be great as it would double up as a hobby, introduce various bits of information and also help in their regular education.

If you see in western countries, the libraries are well stored with picture and sound books for infants, because of which words and language are gradually introduced in such a manner that a child around 8-10 years can read a short novel.

Most people worry about what to allow kids to read, as long as kids are interested, the theme can be fiction, fairy tales, encyclopedias, life skills, etc.

BENEFITS OF EARLY READING:

Encouraging them to read, at an early age, helps them to become quick readers and improve their ability to grasp and understand concepts. Children, who are avid readers, quickly learn to just scan the content rather than read every word. As we prepare our children to become adults, getting them to take up reading as a hobby would help them to be better equipped to handle the life of an adult. Technology has changed and it has reduced the impact and appeal of physical books.

BOOKS AS BEST FRIENDS:

Books are good friends of people. The hobby of reading a book is good and helps one to relax and gain knowledge.  One can read a book almost everywhere and any time. Reading does not cost a lot of money as one can purchase reasonably priced books online. They can also be purchased second hand from any bookstores. HOW READING HELPS THE CHILDREN:

We need to encourage children to read. It can be in any form, newspaper, comics, scriptures or novels. It helps to gain knowledge, learn new things and even improve vocabulary. There are many words that are used in different ways by different writers. When we keep on reading, the art of using appropriate words can be learned. If we are able to provide the base and a habit of reading, our children will learn more. This is also a way of keeping them away from the TV and video games.
