Cloud Computing –

Cloud computing is a model which enables, convenient on demand network access to computing resources like network, servers, storage, applications and services released with service provider interaction.

Models of cloud computing:-

There are three main service models of cloud computing those are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).

IaaS(Infrastructure as a Service):-

It gives users access to storage networking, servers and other computing resources via the cloud, while the user is still responsible for managing their applications, data, middleware etc. IaaS provide automated and scalable environments that provide a high degree of control and flexibility for the user.

Features:-

  • Users pay for IaaS instead of purchasing hardware outright.
  • Depending on processing and storage needs infrastructure is scalable.
  • Enterprises save the cost of buying and maintaining their own hardware.

e.g. AWS(Amazon Web Services), GCE(Google Compute Engine)

PaaS(Platform as a service):-

A platform service provider gives access to a cloud based environment in which users can develop, manage and deliver applications. In addition to storage and other computing resources, users are able to use prebuilt tools to develop, customize and test their own applications.

Features:-

  • PaaS provides a platform with different tools to test, develop and host applications in the same environment.
  • It enables organizations to focus on development without caring for underlying infrastructure.
  • Provides facility to manage security, operating systems, server software and backups.
  • It collaborates work even if teams are working remotely.

e.g. SAP, Google App Engine etc.

SaaS(Software as a Service):-

It provides software and applications through the internet. So there is no need to install applications on the devices. The applications will reside on a remote cloud network and they are accessed through the web or an API.

Features:-

  • SaaS provide software and applications to the user through a subscription model.
  • Users do not have to manage, install or upgrade software; SaaS providers manage this.
  • Data is always secure in the cloud, any failure in the equipment does not result in loss of data.
  • Depending on service needs resources are used.
  • Applications are accessible from almost any internet connected device, from virtually anywhere in the world.

e.g. Google’s G suite, Slack, Dropbox etc.

Types of Cloud Computing:-

There are three basic types of deployment of cloud computing those are Public, Private and Hybrid.

1.Public Cloud:- In public cloud, all the services and supporting infrastructure are managed off-site over the internet and shared across multiple users. Public cloud is more efficient and inexpensive than private and hybrid cloud solutions. e.g. Amazon Elastic cloud, Blue cloud, Google Cloud platform.

2.Private Cloud:- As the name suggests private cloud provides I.T. services to selected users using internet or a private network. All the data is protected behind the firewall. Private cloud solutions are preferred for enhanced security and privacy by the users.

3.Hybrid Cloud:- Hybrid cloud environment combines both Public and Private cloud elements. The clouds in a hybrid environment communicate over an encrypted connection and allow for the portability of data and applications. Hybrid cloud are more flexible than that of public and private cloud solutions.

Benefits of cloud computing:-

1.Cost saving:- Cloud computing solutions are inexpensive than the actual overall infrastructure set up for the I.T. services.

2.Reliable:- Cloud computing solutions are more reliable than in-house I.T. infrastructure.

3.Mobility:– Cloud computing solutions are more portable because user can access data anytime, anywhere as required.

Cloud computing trends:-

There are some real time challenges faced in traditional cloud computing such as security problem, multi cloud management, increased latency and disaster recovery, which are overcome by upcoming trends in cloud computing. Those trends are as following:-

  • Improved cloud security:- Data security in cloud computing can be maintained by applying controls such as data classification, data loss prevention and data encryption.
  • Multi cloud management:- Now a day’s organizations are combining Public and Private cloud to distribute their workloads. Hence demand of multi cloud environment is increased. It has improved flexibility and reduced cost.
  • Edge computing to reduce latency:- Increase in Latency affects network speed which causes delay in travelling cloud data from source to destination. So, to avoid this, edge computing is introduced. It enhances cloud computing network by processing data, application, and compute resources at the  network or end-user.
  • Disaster recovery and backup:- In cloud computing due to network interventions, data interruptions, system crash and network failure causes data loss. To avoid this disaster recovery and backup came into existence, where cloud computing uses its resources to protect data and provides entire system backup to the organizations.
