CYBER-CRIME IN INDIA

WHAT IS CYBERCRIME?

Cybercrime is any criminal activity that involves a computer, network device, or network.

While most cybercrimes are committed to generating profit for cybercriminals, some cybercrimes are committed against computers or devices directly to damage or disable them. Some cybercrimes do both – that is, they target computers to infect them with a computer virus that then spreads to other machines and sometimes to entire networks.

The primary effect of cybercrime is financial. Cybercrime can involve many different types of for-profit crime, including ransomware attacks, email and Internet fraud, and identity fraud, as well as attempts to steal financial accounts, credit cards, or other payment card information.

Cybercriminals can target an individual’s private information or company data to steal and resell. With many workers settling into remote work routines due to the pandemic, cybercrime is expected to increase in frequency in 2021, making it especially important to protect backed-up data. The Purpose Of Ethical Hacking Training in Pune Is to Provide Knowledge & Improve Your Skills To Protect Computer systems.

CYBERCRIME INTO THREE CATEGORIES:

  1. Crimes where the target is a computer device – for example, gaining access to a network;
  2. Crimes in which a computer is used as a weapon — for example, to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack; and
  3. Crimes in which a computer is used as an accessory to a crime — for example, using a computer to store illegally obtained data.

The Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, to which the US is a signatory, defines cybercrime as a wide range of harmful activities, including illegal data capture, system intrusions that threaten network integrity and availability, and copyright infringement.

WHY ARE CYBERCRIMES ON THE RISE?

Nowadays, cybercrime is a fast-growing area of crime and it is increasing at a high speed every day. Criminals find that it is easy to commit crimes in the cyber world, so it becomes a big concern that there should be proper laws and infrastructure to control cybercrime.

Cybercrime is a part of the field that harms a person emotionally as compared to physical way. Cybercrime completely stirs emotions in a person. 58% of Indians felt angry and 51% felt cheated by cybercrime. 46% of Indians felt annoyed or upset when they became a victim of cybercrime. Actions taken by victims of cybercrime included changing their online behavior and not visiting risky websites; 59% and 53% of cybercrime victims took these measures. 46% of those who were victims of cybercrime called their bank immediately. The average cost to solve a cybercrime in India was INR 5,262 and it took an average of 44 days to solve cybercrime. 45% of cyber crimes in India are never solved. By analyzing this data, every person can understand where cybercrime is going and if it is not solved, it will increase at a very high rate. Although the company believes that once its reputation is tarnished and then again, the same position cannot be maintained. A report by Symantec reveals that there has been a 457% increase in cybercrime in India in the last 5 years. India ranks third in terms of the number of cybercriminals living in the country and third in the number of victims of cybercrime. Ethical Hacking Course in Pune helps you get expertise in Cyber – security concepts and methods hackers commonly use such as
virus scripts, reverse engineering, data breaches, etc.

The main victims of the offense are women and children. Studies show that the number of social media users in India has increased drastically from 202.7 million in 2016 to 326.1 million in 2019 and the same is expected to increase to 390 million in 2021, of which 40% are women and 60% are men. But out of this 40%, only 25% of women are aware of cyber crimes only. And then most cybercrimes remain unreported due to the hesitancy and shyness of the victim and the fear of defaming the family name. Many times the girl is held responsible for the crime. Because of these fears, women often do not report crimes, which makes the spirit of the culprit even higher.

  • Computer crime is constantly increasing because it is considered the easiest resource to commit a crime, and people who have too much computer knowledge but still don’t get any work or don’t have that much money go with this resource and start using the internet in a bad way.
  • It is easy for cybercriminals to access data from there and then use it to extort money or for extortion and other crimes.
  • Cybercriminals are on the rise because they don’t have as many threats to catch. After all, they are too expert on the network system so they feel safe. Even they are the ones who create a fake account and then commit crimes.
  • As there are many types of cybercrime, people use it not only in one sense but they use it in one sense but for fraud, stalking, harassment, morphing, bullying, email spoofing, defamation, hacking, and many more

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CYBERCRIME

Everyone who uses the Internet should follow some basic precautions.

  1. Use a complete internet security suite

It’s a good idea to consider trusted security software that provides comprehensive protection for your device, online privacy, and identity and helps protect your private and financial information when you’re online.

  1. Use strong passwords

Do not repeat your passwords on different websites and change them regularly. Make them complex. This means using a combination of at least 10 letters, numbers, and symbols. A password manager app can help you keep your passwords locked down.

  1. Keep your software updated

This is especially important with your operating systems and internet security software. Cybercriminals often use known exploits or bugs in your software to gain access to your system. Patching these exploits and flaws can make you less likely to become a target of cybercrime.

  1. Manage your social media settings

Keep your personal and private information under lock and key. Social engineering cybercriminals can often obtain your personal information with just a few data points, so the less you share publicly, the better. For example, if you post your pet’s name or reveal your mother’s maiden name, you can reveal the answers to two common security questions.

  1. Strengthen your home network

It’s a good idea to start with a strong encryption password as well as a virtual private network. A VPN encrypts all traffic leaving your device until it reaches its destination. If cybercriminals manage to hack your communication line, they will capture nothing but encrypted data. It’s a good idea to use a VPN whenever you’re using a public Wi-Fi network, whether it’s in a library, coffee shop, hotel, or airport.

  1. Talk to your children about the Internet

You can teach your children about acceptable internet use without having to shut down communication channels. Make sure they know they can come to you if they experience any kind of online harassment, stalking, or bullying.

  1. Stay up-to-date on major security breaches

If you do business with a merchant or have an account on a website that was affected by a security breach, find out what information the hackers accessed and change your password immediately.

  1. Take steps to help protect yourself from identity theft

Identity theft occurs when someone unauthorized obtains your personal information in a way that involves deception or fraud, usually for economic gain. For example, you could be tricked into giving out your personal information over the Internet, or a thief could steal your mail to get access to your account information. That is why it is important to protect your personal data. A VPN—short for Virtual Private Network—can also help protect the data you send and receive online, especially when accessing the Internet over public Wi-Fi.

  1. Know that identity theft can happen anywhere

It’s smart to know how to protect your identity even when you’re on the go. There are many things you can do to prevent criminals from obtaining your private information while traveling. These include keeping your travel plans off social media and using a VPN when accessing the internet via hotel Wi-Fi.

  1. Watch the kids

Just as you’ll want to talk to your kids about the Internet, you’ll also want to protect them from identity theft. Identity thieves often target children because their social security number and credit history often provide a clean slate. You can protect yourself from identity theft by being careful when sharing your child’s personal information. It’s also smart to know what to look for that might indicate your child’s identity has been compromised.

  • Seminars and workshops should be organized for better understanding.
