German allows noun combinations (compound nouns). Each part adds meaning, and the final word becomes very specific.

Example / Beispiel:

Haus + Tür + Schlüssel = Haustürschlüssel

(House door key = key for the front door)

Word Breakdown / Wortzerlegung:

 Rind = cow

     Fleisch = meat

     Etikettierung = labeling

 Überwachung = supervision

Donau = Danube River

 Dampf = steam

 Schiff = ship

 Fahrt = travel

Gesellschaft = company

 Kapitän = captain

Meaning:- Captain of the Danube steamship company.

Word Breakdown / Wortzerlegung:

    Kraft = power  

    Fahrzeug = vehicle

   Haftpflicht = liability

 Versicherung = insurance

Meaning:- Motor vehicle liability insurance.


4.Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung

   Word Breakdown / Wortzerlegung:

    Grundstück = property / land

  Verkehr = transaction

  Genehmigung = approval

  Zuständigkeit = responsibility

 Übertragung = transfer

 Verordnung = regulation

Meaning:- Regulation concerning the transfer of responsibility for property transaction approvals.

1. Tomaten auf den Augen haben

Word Breakdown:

  • Tomaten = tomatoes
  • Augen = eyes
  • haben = to have

Literal Translation:

To have tomatoes on your eyes.

Meaning in English:

To not see or notice something obvious.

2. Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof

  • verstehen = to understand
  • nur = only
  • Bahnhof = train station

Literal Translation:

I only understand train station.

English Meaning:

Literal Translation:

To keep fingers crossed.

Word Breakdown:

  • Wolke = cloud
